Hertz Foundation Graduate Fellowship for US Applicants, 2017-2018
The Hertz Foundation is inviting applications for its annual graduate fellowship award toÂ support graduate students working towards theÂ Ph.D.Â degree at one of the foundationâ€™s currently participating schools.Â Eligible applicants for Hertz Graduate Fellowships must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States of America.
The Graduate Fellowship Award is based on merit (not need) and consists of a cost-of-education allowance and a personal support stipend.
The Hertz FoundationÂ mission is to provide unique financial and fellowship support to the nation’s most remarkable Ph.D. students in the physical, biological and engineering sciences. Fellowships are free of most traditional restrictions. Hertz Fellows become innovators and leaders serving in ways that benefit us all.
Course Level: The Foundation supports graduate students working towards the Ph.D. degree in the applied physical, biological and engineering sciences.Â The Foundation does not support study in pursuit of the M.D. Degree or work in descriptive biology, although it may support the Ph.D. portion of a joint M.D./Ph.D. study program.
Study Subject: The following is an illustrative (but not exclusive) list of the fields in which we have recently supported Hertz Fellows. Note, however, that it is up to each fellowship applicant to advocate us his or her specific field of interest as an “applied physical science”.

- Electrical, Mechanical, Civil and Nuclear Engineering

- Quantitative Biology and Bio-Engineering.
Scholarship Award: The Graduate Fellowship Award is based on merit (not need) and consists of a cost-of-education allowance and a personal support stipend.
The cost-of-education allowance is accepted by all of the participating schools in lieu of all fees and tuition. Hertz Fellows, therefore, have no liability for any ordinary educational costs, regardless of their choice among participating schools.
Successful applicants have the choice of two Fellowship options:
Option 1 – Five Year Hertz
- $32,000/ 9-monthpersonal stipend*
- Full tuition equivalent
- Renewable for up to 5 years
Option 2 – Five-Year Coordinated
- Hertz Period – Two Years
- $38,000/ 9-monthpersonal stipend*
- Full tuition equivalent
Other Fellowship Period – Up to Three Years
- $6,000/ year supplemental stipend* from Hertz
- Requires Awardee to accept a 3-year Fellowship from another source

Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for these fellowships:
Eligible applicants for Hertz Fellowships must be students of the applied physical, biological and engineering sciences or mathematics who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States of America, and who are willing to morally commit to make their skills available to the United States in a time of national emergency.
College seniors wishing to pursue the Ph.D. degree in any of the fields of particular interest to the Foundation, as well as graduate students already in the process of doing so, may apply.
Nationality: Eligible applicants for Hertz Graduate Fellowships must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States of America.
College Admission Requirement
English language Requirements: Unless applicants are an MD/Ph.D. student who took the MCAT test, then yes, every fellowship applicant is required to take at least the aptitude portion of the Graduate Record Examination and to have the results sent to the Foundation. Our Foundation ID is #4366. We accept subject test scores but do not require them.
